On Friday, September 24th, Containment Haunted House opened their doors to their first unsuspecting victims for the 2021 Haunt Season with their Main Haunt Attraction: The Overlords
The rulers of the underworld have turned to the innocent
Jack'-O-Lantern to carry out their bidding. They are amassing a legion of these symbols of Halloween and preparing to invade the world of the living. The evils within Containment have joined forces and are attempting to escape their confinement within the walls of their unhallowed ground. They are awaiting your arrival to unknowingly follow you home. They will await the awakening of the orange gourds and help perform the bidding of "The Overlords".
This haunted attraction has been Top Rated in both 2018 and 2019 and has also been voted in the Top 3 Haunted Attractions in USA Today’s Top 10 Nationwide Vote.
This was our first year getting to attend the haunt after happening upon it by mere conincidence, and boy were we glad we found this one!!
Why were we so glad? Did everything impress like we thought it would? Was this really a TOP RATED Haunted Attraction? Let’s find out as we discuss
Containment Haunted House
For this year’s haunt review, we have broken down each haunt that we are visiting into
6 Categories: Sets, Costumes/Makeup/SFX, Technical Effects, Scares, Pacing, and Actors.
Each category is rated on a scale of 1-5 Screams and then averaged out to give an Overall Rating. This new system is to ensure that we are not in any way biased and are giving each attraction that we visit the same fair and equal treatment that they each deserve.
With this new system in mind, let’s break down each of our 6 Categories for Containment Haunted House’s 2021 Haunt!!
Initial Thoughts – Upon arriving at Containment Haunted House, you are greeted by a rather interesting sight. As you pull into the parking lot, it is very apparent that you are in the right place as you can see the lights luring you towards the attraction, and then a guy in the parking lot asks you “You ready to get spooked?” If this is not an indication that you are in the right place, I don’t know what is. You are slightly confused, however, if there is nobody there to help you park, because when you arrive, there is a sign that says “Paintball Arena” on it. So clearly this location is a Paintball Arena of sorts by day and in the off season, but during Halloween it becomes Containment. You can see an assortment of food trucks out front. You can see in the distances large shipping containers that have been stacked up to create a large building like structure. It is quite impressive. You honestly are not sure what you are in for at all. Could this be as simple as a backyard haunted house inside of some shipping containers? Or is the detail work going to be to the EXTREME? Well, we can safely say that we found that answer out for ourselves, and all in all were SUPER IMPRESSED!!
Sets – 5/5 Screams – All of the set work in this haunt is very impressive. The team here has literally used their shipping containers to create an actual house, so you really can’t ever tell where the inside and outside begin and end. It is quite impressive and incredibly unique. There is a lot of detail work that has gone into the sets, and it is evident with each scene that you enter. You actually feel like you have stepped into this different world. You have stepped into this new scene. And they somehow are fitting each of these tiny scenes, into SHIPPING CONTAINERS. That’s the part that gets me!! They use what they have and create an AMAZING experience with it. From the minute that you first enter the attraction to the last moments as you exit, you are fully immersed in an amazing experience and are truly CONTAINED inside CONTAINMENT.
Costumes/Makeup/SFX – 5/5 Screams – The costumes and makeup throughout this show were equally amazing to everything else found in this haunt! Every character had costumes that were unique to what they were. Whether they were a butcher, a diner employee, a creepy little girl, a soul trader, or just a dead person, they had some great costumes and makeup. They did amazing jobs with each induvial person to create unique characters as you went through this haunt. VERY IMPRESSIVE!!
Technical Effects – 5/5 Screams – The technical effects in this haunt were AMAZING. That’s literally all I can say about them. The use of animatronics, and lighting, and fog, and lasers created a truly remarkable experience all throughout the haunt. With each room, you never knew what you were going to get next. You may have gotten a room full of lasers and fog and mirrors. You may have gotten a room with some awesome animatronics. You may have gotten a room of strobe lights. You may have even walked into an ice cave where the temperature ACTUALLY DROPPED. There really were no limitations in this haunt. They used their technical effects to the MAX. There was an incredible animatronic at the beginning of the house and it interacted with you. It’s mouth moved, it’s head moved, and it would respond to you in real time. I was so impressed by this!! They did a really great job with their technical effects.
Scares – 5/5 Screams – The scares throughout this haunt were GREAT. Our group hit EVERY SCARE and about died each time. There were so many unique ways in which the scares were delivered as well. Some of them were as simple as hiding behind a wall and jumping out and being SUPER SUPER Loud. Then some of the scares relied on some special effects to help. There’s one particular scare that comes to mind and that is the scare inside of a room with mirror walls and lasers pointing from either side. It was SO COOL. The two actors hid themselves perfectly, and somehow I NEVER saw them, but they just sort of appeared from nowhere and came running RIGHT AT ME through the lasers. It was such a cool scare and it genuinely scared the S**T out of me!! All in all the scares in this haunt are next to none and were very effective.
Pacing – 4/5 Screams – The pacing of this haunt was GREAT. So far, this has been the longest haunt that we have been through, coming in at about 20 minutes. We’ve already been through about 12 haunts this season, and I don’t think any of them have topped out at 20 minutes yet except this one. It was very impressive, especially given the fact that we were by ourselves. There was only one or two times that we ran up on the group in front of us, and that has to be in part with the interactive elements of the haunt. BUT, even when that would happen, the actors would not make us go forward with the next group, they would hold us in that spot and give us their spiel again so that we would get the FULL Experience. I think that was absolutely awesome and something that other haunts could look into doing in some way. This ensured that we never missed anything and to make sure that we didn’t hear the EXACT SAME THING twice, the actors would change it up slightly to make it unique to us and would even play off of things that we would say in response. It truly a great experience. The length of this haunt was great and offered a lot of awesome variety. The only issue I did have, was when you enter through the front doors of the haunt, you think that you are in the haunt, but little do you realize you are actually waiting in line still to get the rules again. While this is something that I do praise later because the experience in that room was AMAZING and HILARIOUS, it is still slightly long because you end up waiting 20 more minutes before you even enter the haunt. So if there was a way to speed this part up in some form or fashion, that would help immensely.
Actors/Team – 5/5 Screams – The actors and team behind this attraction are second to none. We have been to several haunted houses across Georgia and South Carolina and have encountered some truly amazing teams behind the haunts, and Containment has earned their rightful spot next to them. Every actor inside of this haunt is EXTREMELY devoted to their role and wouldn’t dare break character. In fact, they all know how to adapt their character to YOU and whoever is coming through the haunt. This haunt has several interactive portions where the actors will literally play out a sort of scene with you, and when they do this, it makes you a part of the experience even more. Many of the actors have some great comedy chops and scaring chops too, and it really does make for quite a scary AND fun experience. There was one actor that I have to give IMMENSE PROPS to, and that is the guy who was playing one of the first ‘Overlords’ that you encounter in the haunt. He was basically a tree of sorts that literally spoke to you. The head moved, the mouth moved, and he was interacting. You could never see the guy operating it, and that’s even better because it made the whole illusion REAL. He was cutting up with me as I waited to enter the next portion of the house. He was cutting up with other people. He literally made the most out of his job and had us all in line laughing. Then to give some more credit where credit is due, there was a girl at another portion giving you the general rules of the house. When I say that this girl had her script down to a T, I mean that. I sat there and heard her give the rules at least 5 or 6 times, and NEVER did she deviate from the script and never did she break character. I was super impressed. Even when me and my lonely party of 1 came up to her, she still remained in character and gave the full list of rules and was careful not to deviate from any part of the story. Now while this can get slightly annoying if you are just standing there waiting your turn, it was still impressive to me. And the same can be said again about all of the actors inside. They were all sticking to script, nobody ever broke character. They were ALL IN. And they were not the only ones that were ALL IN either. Outside the haunt before you even enter, there was a young woman taking photos of each group before they entered the haunt who was awesome, and then there was another young lady at the front door who would give the rules and such, and she had A LOT OF ENERGY. Even the two of them seemed to have a character. It was very impressive and it made the experience even better than I could’ve imagined!!
Overall Rating: 5 SCREAMS
Containment Haunted House was hands down our FAVORITE Haunt that we attended on October 1st on our Tour of North Georgia Haunts. We had a great time the whole time. We laughed, we cried, we screamed. We did it ALL. This haunt impressed us from the minute we got there because we knew it was something different. It was something that we would not soon forget! Their unique setting, their macabre sets, their awesome technical effects, and of course their amazing cast and crew!! They knocked the show out of the park to create a truly immersive and scary event for the Halloween Season!!
